OCCUPAZIONE
Padiglione Italia nel Mondo - Portugal
54ª Bienal de Veneza 2011

video installation | 2 DVD, colour, sound

HORS SUJET portrait
video installation | 3 DVD, colour, sound

The antithesis in the installation’s title, HORS SUJET portrait (OUTSIDE THE SUBJECT portrait), intends to question the power of representation of the portrait.
In this hommage to Victorine Meurent, we look again into the diverse works by Edouard Manet in which Victorine has been the model to the painter: the far-famed “Olympia” or “Lunch on the Grass”, as many others...
The annoying enigma of Olympia’s glance, the nude and cold Olympia, the “monster of the banal love” ... Grisette or prostitute? Alive or dead? The woman sitting at lunch on the grass... Victorine prostitute, Victorine street singer, woman with the parrot, child with the pifaro, Victorine con la espada (with the sword), Victorine at the train station, Victorine’s portrait...
Debuted this year at Stenersen Museum in Oslo, as part of the international and currently on tour exhibition “Off the Beaten Path, Violence Women and Art”, HORS SUJET portrait was created in the process of a cinema workshop for women with life stories connected to prostitution.

PORTRAIRE a portrait's footnotes
in process

“As part of the creative process of the installation HORS SUJET portrait, my working notes take the form of a visual notebook: the film is a moment of reflection I would like to share with you.
"The face of the other doesn't wait the intentionality of knowledge, the totalitarian vision, the understanding of the meaning of history, in order to be significant. I search for the Time of happening a face to face, a entre-nous alien to the intention or to the power of representation of the other which opposes to the forms of violence and annihilation of otherness.

60 minutes for a portrait in movement. Three faces, a long exposure time, an image-time saturated interval. At the beginning it is only frontality, the extension of a gaze over a long exposure time, between the time taken for a song and the time taken for a portrait.
